Opanak Serbian Dancers Association Edmonton
History
Serbian Dancers Association Opanak is the largest organization within the Serbian Church-school Congregation of Saint Sava. It was founded in 1959 with a modest group of less than 15 members.
The original rehearsals were held in the basement of the family Janjic house.
There are currently over 200 members distributed in 7 ensembles by age, from 4 year-olds and older.
Once a year, all ensembles visit Serbian communities across Canada and the USA and thus make new acquaintances and cooperate with other folklore groups, all with the aim of preserving Serbian tradition and culture. Annual concert is traditionally held in October, the occasion that Opanak marks its Slava, St. Parascheva (St. Petka).
Opanak regularly participates in all manifestations and events organized by CSC St. Sava and thus contributes to the prosperity of the Serbian community in Edmonton.
